This month’s winning ride truly demonstrates what a labor of love is. Bruce Cole’s 1969 Mercury Cyclone 428 CJ ran into disuse in the early ’90s and spent two decades sitting under an inferior car cover. Not surprisingly, what resulted barely resembled a car let along a legendary Mercury. Since the car was primarily made of rust after twenty-years, an incredibly time intensive restoration was started. New brakes and exhaust were installed and the Holley 785 double pump carburetor was rebuilt. That’s the very, very tip of the iceberg. The sheer number of internals that had to be replaced could out-list entire parts catalogs.

On the outside, the body was blasted down, stripped, taken nearly down to the frame and then repainted. The bumpers were re-chromed along with beautifully restored factory wheels. New graphics on-par with the original car were added and the interior was completely restored. Performance wise, forget a hurricane, nothing will rock you like this Cyclone. With a 428 CobraJet rumbling under the hood, a C-6 transmission and 390:1 positrack rear end, this is a force to be reckoned with. Needless to say, this Mercury is now better than original condition.
