In this episode Chris shows you how to rebuild the top end of our block using a cam shaft and roller lifters from Crower Cams, plus heads and intake manifold from Dart Machinery.
This episode features Olivia Korte as our Motorz Girl and also has our regular segments, Partz and Letterz. In “Partz”, Chris talks about Craftsman torque wrenches, Holley air cleaners.and Hellwig sway bars.
As always, be sure to stick around to watch our out-takes at the very end!

Olivia Korte (Motorz Girl) was introduced in the 2nd episode of the current (5th) season. She is part of our Motorz family now, but she is not related otherwise.
March 24th, 2012 at 1:05 pm
No prob, yeah i know how much of a pain editing tons of footage is
March 24th, 2012 at 1:08 pm
Olivia, Will you marry me?I’m only 16 but I think we can work it out.
March 24th, 2012 at 1:11 pm
I don’t disagree with using motor oil on the head bolts, for more uniform torque. But I was a little confused when I learned that NGK spark manufacturers don’t recommend using antiseize, with the point being that lubricant might change the ultimate stress on the plug and associated crush washer. Their point is that lubricant might result in an effective over-torque. Presumably balanced torque throughout the head is the main goal, so it shouldn’t matter much….

Thank you for the upload, I love your chanel, love your videos and recommendations, so thank you for that! …If I can just ask; is there a reason why you used cast iron heads instead of alu. heads and didn’t use roller rockers?
March 24th, 2012 at 1:47 pm
what happened to the sound at 15:11
March 24th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
Damn, Olivia you are stunning :D

Makeup is kinda nasty, but that’s just my thing. A little eyeshadow though maybe.. anyway I’m so glad this build came up right when I’m about to start my own small block build! So thanks to you motorz crew!
March 24th, 2012 at 2:29 pm
Cost is the main reason
March 24th, 2012 at 2:30 pm
We just watched it and didn’t notice anything wrong…

Thanks Guido! Keep up the great work yourself!

She’s got a nice top end!
March 24th, 2012 at 5:00 pm
What are you’re thoughts on RTV around the water passages for the intake manifold? Also, do you plan to make a video about carb tuning?
March 24th, 2012 at 5:14 pm
Ok, I see what happened. For some reason after the Sears commercial the audio went to single channel. I’m not sure why you guys don’t hear anything at that point, as you should hear audio coming from at least one speaker. I’ll see if I can fix it — I may have to re-upload a fixed version of the video, though. Thanks for letting us know!
March 24th, 2012 at 5:45 pm
who will pop who ? hahaha lol.
March 24th, 2012 at 5:46 pm
HHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM
March 24th, 2012 at 5:55 pm
My Camaro is dying for a new engine. Literally, it needs a new interior, new paint, and the engine, well, the engine’s doing fine, but it’s a slow 2.8 v6. ):
March 24th, 2012 at 6:44 pm
the dog in the mustang looked like a tweaker.
March 24th, 2012 at 8:21 pm
Damn some people obviously don’t meet a lot of women.
March 24th, 2012 at 8:34 pm
hope you remembered to remove the piece of tape that you put on before you installed the intake.
March 24th, 2012 at 9:14 pm
Top notch video Chris! Keep up the good work & sorry about your technical difficulties with your right side audio.
March 27th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

March 27th, 2012 at 4:36 pm
girls and cars accidents are sure to happen! i mean how else could you explain away deleting all the youtube videos? there’s just no way around that, my mind won’t let it happen!
March 28th, 2012 at 4:11 am
Are you ever going to build a JDM motor for a civic from scratch like a B18 c1 or refered to as a GSR motor. I would love to see that- I sucribed to your channel you guys rock
March 28th, 2012 at 10:19 am
can you guys do exhaust please?
March 28th, 2012 at 11:23 am
The triangle is for advanced, and the square is for retarded cam timing.
March 28th, 2012 at 11:28 am
That is correct. We indicated this at 3:00
March 28th, 2012 at 3:29 pm
great video.Really love your shows.Very informative.Keep em coming.
March 28th, 2012 at 4:25 pm
Thank you! We are cranking more out soon!
March 28th, 2012 at 4:53 pm
let say i have a s10 03 with the v6 vortex motor and i want to swap to 350 motor, do i have to change the transmission also? if so which transmission?
March 29th, 2012 at 2:12 am
Okay I can’t deny that Olivia is sexy, but what is her purpose on this show? Does she actually know what she’s saying?
March 29th, 2012 at 9:33 am
Of course she does. She’s no stranger to the automotive industry. Read her profile at motorzgirl(dot)com and she is a wonderful addition to our show!
March 29th, 2012 at 2:03 pm
hey bro stick to the v8 don’t go with the rice burner 4 cylinders these punk vermint geekster treeksters are wanting you to trip on. fact maybe do some mopar big block action, in the future episodes. we got enough of that vw aircooled junk in this country.hey it’s all in good fun bro.
March 29th, 2012 at 2:11 pm
Thank you for the feedback… we always appreciate suggestions.
March 30th, 2012 at 12:07 am
every time she says lube omg
March 30th, 2012 at 8:49 am
She’s good at speaking and quite attractive but I think she should act a little more serious while talking about the tools. Jesse Combs is a great example of what I mean. Otherwise, great show.
March 30th, 2012 at 8:51 am

April 4th, 2012 at 5:48 am
what? thats all? would you make a video about how to put the engine back to the car?
April 5th, 2012 at 10:40 am
We can only cover so much in one episode :) We’ve got one more Chevy 350 episode on the way, and then in a future episode we’ll be installing it in one of our project vehicles. Thanks for watching!
April 14th, 2012 at 3:34 am

April 22nd, 2012 at 4:35 pm
Not all inline 4s are bad though… My car happens to be an inline 4.
April 25th, 2012 at 10:54 am
Have you fired the engine yet or will that be in the next video? I noticed you didnt use any sealant but oil on the bottom heads bolts that run into the water jackets. Or did you just not show it? Very important step to note so water doesnt seep out.
April 25th, 2012 at 1:09 pm
After installing the intake what do you do with the blue tape on the oil pressure journal ?? leave it there ??
April 25th, 2012 at 6:52 pm
how much did this rebuild cost?
April 26th, 2012 at 6:40 pm
i’d like to rebuild her top end ;)
May 11th, 2012 at 8:53 pm
i was just about to wright that YOU TOOK MY COMMENT

June 23rd, 2012 at 12:29 am
Instead of RTV for the gaskets could I use Indian Head Shellac?
June 24th, 2012 at 2:17 pm
im not trying to knock the video. its not a good idea to use moly lube on the cam bearings because they can delay oil to the rest of the engines components during initial start up.i learned this the hard way now i onl;y use the moly on the lifter bottoms and the lobes oil on the bearing surfaces.
June 24th, 2012 at 2:18 pm
yes i like it better then rtv i only use rtv for the intakes water ports and across the front and back of the block instead of the cheap rubber seals. those go in the trash
July 8th, 2012 at 10:40 am
i didnt see him plasta gauge the bearings and to much oil on the bolts in my opinion, but we all build them different.
July 10th, 2012 at 1:00 am
Never use the front or back intake gaskets they leak every time and always tork 10 pounds over stock
July 10th, 2012 at 1:03 am
You don’t need the csm install tool.or you also don’t need new cam bearings .I have rebuilt 150000 mile motors and the bearings are fine.to much wasting time on stuff you don’t need to do.and that’s a 305 its on the block dude learn to read
July 10th, 2012 at 1:05 am
Weres the cam retain clip
July 15th, 2012 at 12:52 am
dont get me wrong i like v8′s, i have a v8 truck, but my 4 cylinder 240sx is pretty fast, it can easily beat my buddies v8 2002 mustang, those wrx engines can make like 330 hp… 4 cylinder. they are also lighter.
July 15th, 2012 at 10:37 pm
The Chevy isn’t the only thing that’s had its top end rebuilt
July 18th, 2012 at 4:36 am

August 13th, 2012 at 4:31 pm
Without a turbo or supercharger?
August 13th, 2012 at 4:32 pm
What are the weight comparisons between aluminum heads and cast iron heads?
August 13th, 2012 at 5:05 pm
mine has a factory turbo, it has an rb20det, his mustang does not have either, its natural.
August 17th, 2012 at 11:20 pm
4 cylinder = paperweight XD

August 30th, 2012 at 1:34 pm
Head bolt’s dipped in oil on a SBC :( good luck when water starts to leak out from the head bolts.Use Loctite Pipe Sealant with Teflon or ARP thread sealant.

September 20th, 2012 at 3:31 pm
She knows shes fine. Look at the way she stands and smiles
October 6th, 2012 at 10:05 pm
torque head bolts 3 increments and never use a extension torque’ing them down !!!!
October 16th, 2012 at 5:17 pm
or you could get a “rice” straight 6 RB26 or 2JZ which has a bottom end of 1200HP and you can easily build a 2JZ to a daily drive-able 850HP, or more. i love my v8s but unless it’s an LSx with forged internals you can’t compete with a 2JZ or RB26.
October 21st, 2012 at 1:51 pm
Does it matter how your cam shaft is installed, what I mean is the direction of it or does it not matter at all, just any way I can get it in.
November 1st, 2012 at 12:27 pm
watched a video and found myself hooked to MOTORZ!!! i want this channel. what networks are supporting this show?! SPEED?! booya for the 350. informative and helpful for sure! I have a blown head gasket on a 5.7L 350 any essential information needed aside from what you showed here?
November 1st, 2012 at 11:44 pm
Really? Why do you have to be an ass like that, many of those 4 bangers will kill v8′s, and vice versa. Example 4g63 can make over 1100hp, granted the bigger an engine, the longer and more power it can last, but that does not make it good, power size ratio is what makes an engine great. Example 3l straight 6 2jz-gte, have made over 2000hp still street legal. Respect both sides, btw blame ricers on the owners not the car, and second many drag cars are dumb as hell too… you know
November 3rd, 2012 at 10:32 pm
Thanks for watching, and getting hooked! Motorz is on various TV networks including The Pursuit Channel on DirecTV and Dish, The Auto Channel, Untamed Sports TV, and My Family TV. You can find more specific information at our website motorz(dot)tv/tv
November 9th, 2012 at 4:59 am
Be careful because not all 350′s (at least the one that I rebuilt) when aligning the timing gears it wasn’t done at top dead center, rather cylinder six had to be at the top of it’s compression stroke.
November 12th, 2012 at 12:41 pm
When using an extension your supposed to add for the flexing of it. Bout 1# per inches
November 19th, 2012 at 12:20 am
What keeps the cam shaft from coming out? Is there a retainer? Guess I missed that part.
November 27th, 2012 at 7:21 pm
ah the old rb26 and 2jz cards, the number one most popular response from japanese fan boys when they need to sound like they know what there talking about.
November 28th, 2012 at 6:30 pm
Could not of said it any better myself
November 30th, 2012 at 5:17 pm
Hello, I was just curious about dipping the threaded ends of the bolts in oil. Is that something that the manufacturer specified. I’m an aircraft mechanic and on fasteners we are tought to achieve proper torqe with clean dry threads. No matter if its a reciprocating engine similar to autos of a turbine engine, unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.
December 3rd, 2012 at 12:02 pm
I have built several sbc and bbc and I am curious about the head bolts in oil also how do you keep the gasket/surfaces free from oil when you insert the bolt? I would think this is a semi dangerous practice i was always told “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”.
December 9th, 2012 at 2:07 am
What was the totall price of re-building this 350 small black?

These videos are GREAT! There’s one thing though… When’s Olivia going to get in on some engine building? She needs some seat time! You guys should do a “carburetor’d turbocharged build on a small-block V8 and get her in on it! I really would like to see how to turbo a carburetor’d v8 though, I here there are some things about air pressures within and outside the carb that have be dealt with. Again though, GREAT VID’s KEEP IT UP!

I love all cars but there is a 4cyl that can keep up with V8′s besides the inline 6′s which annoy me when ppl bring them up cause thats all they know…mainstream idiots…The Honda F20c engines out of the S2000′s are nasty little fuckers and 13B 20B rotary’s are nasty too….but when it comes to pure HP you can not and I repeat can not beat a american V8

Go do some research… TDC #6 compression stroke is dot to dot…TDC #1 compression stroke is the cam and the crank gears at the 12 O’clock positions… and its the crank that determines stroke not the cam

it’s not all i know, it’s just the king of examples. sure, you could drop a 13B into a miata and be a badass, i just finished an SR20 swap into a 200sx and although impressive motors for what they are, price wise a 2jz (which can be imported with the transmission for around $2500) that can be easily built to insane power, is the king of examples of why american v8′s (especially outdated ones) can’t compete in power.

February 14th, 2013 at 4:29 pm
for instance, as you keep upping the power that you could get out of a SBC you have to spend more and more money, maybe spending $400 on a port job for you camel hump heads, getting them rebuilt and have hardened valve seats installed, new valve springs to accommodate whatever cam you run, maybe shaft mount roller rockers and fuel injection, a cheap efi set up would run you about $1300, then there’s another $300 maybe for a cold air intake, maybe machining for clearance with stroker cranks, etc.

First of all I want to say that this is an awesome series, with awesome content! But guys, do you realy need thát amount of commercials? Ik understand you need to finance your video’s, but this just gets out of hand. And in my opinion you should let Olivia (or whatever she is called) do some technical stuff, in stead of just being there. This is just awkward. Get rid of her, or let her do something real. ;) Great show!

First of all I want to say that this is an awesome series, with awesome content! But guys, do you realy need thát amount of commercials? Ik understand you need to finance your video’s, but this just gets out of hand. Thank you for the feedback, and for watching! Yes, our sponsors pay to keep the show going… without them, we can’t produce this great content :)

wont all that oil on the head bolts hydraulic and give a false reading at the torque spec, maybe moly lube on one side of the treads will be sufficient enough.

Either is generally sufficient. One should be careful not to drench the bolts as shown. I’ve seen blocks crack when torquing the head bolts from the oil being trapped beneath. I forget the proper term for that.

agreed. its basic physics. an engine with a higher volume for compression will beat a smaller engine in power. yes there are some 4 cylinders with 800 hp and yes there are some 6 cylinders that can be at 1200 hp but how about v8 drag cars that are over 3000 horsepower easy? the point is yes you can give a lot of power to a 4 cylinder. but if you do the same mods, in proportion to the engine size, to both a 4 cylinder and an 8 cylinder engine. the 8 cylinder engine will win every time.

Did you use the copper spray on the head gaskets too? And when did you remove the tape?

Thanks for the info grate show. But I’ve heard in other vids that in a 350 Small block chevy you don’t put your timing cange with piston #1 at TDC insted you put #6 at comprestion stroke. What is your comment on that?

You should do the torquing with smaller foot lbs . At first, maybe 20 lbs first. than maybe 50lbs. and than 70 lbs.
