Episode Notes

Have you ever wondered what happens when you drop your engine block off at a machine shop? In this episode, Chris meets up with Britt to find out exactly what happens. We couldn’t film this episode in our own studio because of all the specialized precision equipment that is needed, so we went on location to show you how it’s done by a professional.

This episode also has our regular segments, Partz and Letterz. In “Partz”, Chris talks about a new tool from Craftsman to help you with those long bolts, introduces an innovative new vehicle programmer/tuner from SCT that works via Bluetooth with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, and he shows you a cool retro body accent piece for your Mustang from 3dCarbon! Be sure to catch Letterz, too, as we have a special shout-out to one of our viewers!

Music

This episode features an original Motorz theme song by Jeremy Pritchard.

  12. reallunacy Says:

I like the tuner. They have had options like this for a while now, though I don’t think they actually had a tuning option. Search Torque on the Android Market to see what I currently have. Of course right after I got the app I got booted back to using a ’92.

  13. hp11208 Says:

    Cute girl

  14. CyFi6 Says:

You showed them installing the torque plate, but then it was gone when they started honing? What gives?

  15. motorztv Says:

@CyFi6 Good eye! Some clips are out of sequence there, but if you do look close you can find one of those has the torque plate :)

  16. Terreos Says:

Chris don’t be teasing me with more mustang parts unless you’re gonna make another episode. Heck this show is the reason I bought a mustang with all the aftermarket parts you’ve showed. lol. Keep up the great work. Always love your teams hard work.

  17. motorztv Says:

@Terreos Thanks man! We are definitely going to have more Mustang stuff… right now we’re focusing on the Chevy 350 rebuild. We’ve done quite a lot to our Mustangs over the past few seasons… what else is left to do? LOL

  18. Terreos Says:

@Terreos Well you’re team has done superchargers and nitrous oxide. So theoretically you can still do a turbocharger or just more engine builds for camshafts, heads, or forged internals. But, you’re chevy 350 videos give alot of insight on such things. So I say go turbo!

  19. 67mustangreg Says:

You’re going to drop this in a foxbody right? Great video but the ads are so blatent. Brings it down a notch for me, but if that’s who’s paying the bills….

  26. motorztv Says:

Just a note on the remote start systems. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT circumvent the neutral safety switch setup during the install. Just had a local mechanic almost killed by one that a customer had installed improperly and he hit the remote start button during some work and it pinned him against a wall in his shop. There’s a reason those safety features are there, and an improper install may injure or kill you or someone else.

  223. Ryan Ruiz Says:

One of the worst things Detroit did was moving to metric. Now I have to have multiple sets of tools. The worst cars are like the GM G-body which have both standard and metric fasteners.

Grinding the block with the assembly in place with no vac and magnet to catch the metal powder is wrong think aboute it !glad youre not building a engine for me,

  227. Andy Batto Says:

And that’s what the coolant is for jackass. Like he’d just breath metal particles…

  235. DemocracyOfHypocrisy Says:

Is it necessary to have a motor machine shop cleaned before you rebuild it or do they make attachments for power tools so you can do an amateur cleaning job yourself?

  239. Amy Anderson Says:

Thanks for sharing this I’ve been trying to do that for 2 days

  240. MajorArtillary Says:

It would be best if you have the shop clean it. You could do it yourself, but any mistakes or missed spots could be very bad for the block when being machined. Some places may clean it for free if machining it.

  249. ipissed Says:

Get a trash can, or storage bin, or some other container that will fit the block, but just barely, put the block in, then fill it up with purple cleaner you can get it in 5gal bucket from AutoZone. Leave for overnight, or a few days. Then rinse with water. BEST BLOCK CLEANER EVER. Now dip the rest of the parts. Don’t soak any seals, or rubber parts though.

  250. Tallerico500 Says:

@OMGnanerpus More or less. It’s a different engine, but same basic principles.

  251. YaKuZaffs Says:

i want to know how much this would cost me.. no one ever tell the cost! only thing you guys said was WWW:AMP-RESEARCH.COM!!! YEAH

  252. Mike Allmon Says:

sorry… that’s not a cold air intake!!! it is breathing hot under hood air. It changes all the fuel trim. The original air cleaner was really a “cold air intake”People don’t get it

  253. Mike Allmon Says:

oh, and K&N air filters are problematic junk!!if you can read a newspaper through it, it’s not filtering air and the oil is not supposed to be in the intake system. They were designed for carbureted race cars. not delicate computer controlled cars!

  254. flatline7310 Says:

Just had my Cadillac CTS engine rebuilt. Interesting to see how it’s done.

  257. clyde beyrer Says:

I am not familiar with how machine shops do what they do , I like everything I saw except the part where he moved the block from one part of the shop to the other via straps thru the main caps. Is this normal ?

  258. ajmcgirr Says:

    rebulid a bugatti

  259. tom ashton Says:

hey, you line bore first, then align hone to finish size, boring makes the holes round, else your just honing a a hole that isnt round, all measurements are determined by the crank center line!!!!!

  267. jacklegg21 Says:

At the shop I used to work at we had old cranks and bearings that we’d use adn clearance the block BEFORE any other machine work was done.

  268. YourAverageNerd777 Says:

What are the costs for machining the block?

  269. Sturm geschutz Says:

Pistons are slightly eliptical, relationship between material and expansion under heat, so do you measure the bigger diameter or?

  270. Bakes Fakes Says:

as an amature I question do most engine even need to be machined. What happens to a block that is out of tolerance ? I never heard a mechanic saya car won’t run because the pistons are worn.I’m just asking a question. I know i’m wrong but I can’t answer why

  271. Bill Cavazos Says:

Very well done. You guys even mentioned in 5 seconds an old secret of mine that used in building the fastest engines in my day.

  272. Jason Travor Says:

I’m surprised a shop this nice lets their operators use dial bore gages like that. Those are notoriously inaccurate even when used properly, and using them properly is a bitch.Spend a few thousand and get real bore mics and never second a measurement.
