Episode Notes
This is the season 4 finale! The new season 5 is on the way, though, so don’t change change that channel!
Have you ever wondered what’s involved in changing the fluids running throughout your vehicle? In this episode Chris first shows you the differences between all the fluids in your car or truck, and then how to change them all! Using our project Ford F-150 he shows you how to replace the gear oil in the rear differential, motor oil in the engine, and transmission fluid (and it gets a new transmission pan from PML!), coolant (antifreeze). Chris also shows you how easy it is to add new refrigerant to a Mazda 6 when your A/C starts warming up on you!
One fluid change we didn’t have time to cover in this episode was the brake fluid. The good news is that we covered this in great detail in our recent episode, “Big Brakes“, so be sure to check that out!
This sure is a messy episode, but it can be fun and you end up saving a lot of money by doing the labor yourself. Having the right tools definitely helps too!
This episode also has our regular segments, Partz and Letterz. In “Partz”, Chris talks about a really cool multi-battery charger from Craftsman that helps save workbench space, innovative new tires from General Tire, some awesome off-road wheels and tires from Dick Cepek, as well as some “green” products for your ride!
Music
This episode features music from COLDWEST. “Snakeskinner”, “Ignition”, and an original song for the Motorz Intro.

Royal Purple! sweet, i used that on my car.. a bit more expensive than usual but worth it.
June 17th, 2011 at 12:25 pm
YES!!!Been waiting for this for a long time now,btw i LOVE royal purple
June 17th, 2011 at 12:29 pm
LOL @ the wet spot on the Sway bar after the cut away… Fast Funnel didn’t work I guess…..
June 17th, 2011 at 12:32 pm
@Twiztidpsychokiller No, it totally did work! That dripped on there when Chris removed the bolt.
June 17th, 2011 at 12:41 pm
@motorztv Lol right on, I thought maybe it was coming out to fast for the funnel and overflowed. Love the show.. keep up the good work!!
June 17th, 2011 at 12:49 pm
why bother with royal purple oil when your gona use a fram filter?
June 17th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
chris, why is the conventional oil lable all covered up? but royal purple is fully exposed?
June 17th, 2011 at 1:06 pm
I love the way people say you just have to add a/c refrigernt if your a/c is not cooling it has leak in the system because refrigerent does leace the system without having a leak
June 17th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
@KillerZero259 RP helped sponsor the episode whereas the other manufacturer did not.
June 17th, 2011 at 1:51 pm
@PQPLAYER92 it’s not required to use a higher quality oil filer when using a synthetic. Royal Purple does make oil filters, BTW, but one was not available to use for this episode.
June 17th, 2011 at 1:52 pm
@12344richard You could definitely have a leak, but that was not the case on our Mazda 6. It was just time to add refrigerant–which solved the problem for us.
June 17th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
Are you guys going to do any epsiodes on Ford Diesels soon?
June 17th, 2011 at 2:07 pm
@shsmustangs Nothing is planned in the immediate future, but you never know!
June 17th, 2011 at 2:38 pm
i got a 1980 chevy scottsdale that needs some body work….
June 17th, 2011 at 2:45 pm
when you add ac refrigerent, put the bottle in hot water because that causes it to expand so you get more in. Great video
June 17th, 2011 at 3:44 pm
Great show guys, I just wish you didn’t tell people about the refrigerant. AC problems should really be reviewed by a professional, don’t mess with it. Oh and that coolant flush kit is not a very good method either.
June 17th, 2011 at 4:29 pm
Why use such a sub-par oil filter, with great oil?
June 17th, 2011 at 5:38 pm
GEEZUS! Those Dick Cepek rims are HUGE!
June 17th, 2011 at 6:12 pm
@moterztv my 08 f150 keeps haveing problems with missing and rough idling iv taken it to the dealer several times and put on 2 new coilpacks and e3 pugs which are sweet and it cured the miss for a little wile it only has 21600 mi and is fine other than that any ideas or similar probs with ur f150

June 17th, 2011 at 7:43 pm
@motorztv oh right, that makes sense.
June 17th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Mazda6? Chris, you have some class. I love mine. :) I’m 124k in and it still blows ice cold. Haha.
June 17th, 2011 at 10:00 pm
So to add refrigerant to the car, do we hook up the can to the low end or the high end? I would like to do this but I’m confused. I have a Acura Integra
June 17th, 2011 at 10:45 pm
@caquillo07 Low end. See at 13:45
June 17th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
@americansmark This vehicle lives in San Diego, so its A/C gets a lot of use :)
June 17th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
@ambee514 They sure are!
June 17th, 2011 at 10:47 pm
@XenomorphLV426 There’s nothing wrong with it :) Plus it’s one that’s available at just about every auto parts store.
June 17th, 2011 at 10:47 pm
@mrjost55 Thanks! The coolant flush kit isn’t the best, true, but it’s the most common one available at auto parts stores and you are limited when doing it at home.
June 17th, 2011 at 10:48 pm
@americantractors Thanks for the tip, and for watching!
June 17th, 2011 at 11:54 pm
Why did you black out all the labels except for the RP ones? Just curious.
June 17th, 2011 at 11:57 pm
@motorztv Pssh. You guys should just roll down your windows and enjoy that weather. Try dealing with 8-10″ of snow half the year and 90-100* days the other half with tornado watches every other day. Ohio weather sucks. lol. I’d love to be in Cali.
June 18th, 2011 at 12:05 am
@Olskoolbeats Our intern got silly with the black tape! Actually, see previous Q&A from KillerZero259 :)
June 18th, 2011 at 12:06 am
@americansmark Oh we do… however sometimes the high temps aren’t so enjoyable when driving. Snow? What’s that? LOL
June 18th, 2011 at 12:08 am

@PQPLAYER92 Dude he didnt say they didnt make RP Oil Filters, he said one wasn’t available.
June 26th, 2011 at 1:19 am
Chris I have a question about my tranny, but it requires a phone call, or a long email. Would it be okay to contact you? Thanks, any help would be GREATLY appreciated. My buddies and I are thinking the filter may be clogged with shavings from muddin and taching out 2nd gear on an auto tranny, or fluid may be too thin and screwin up the friction plates. It’s an 05 F150. Bought it used with 67k miles and thought it had a tranny flush. Now at 91k so maybe it didnt have a flush if this is happening.
June 27th, 2011 at 9:32 am
Hope some of your friends has an BMW 740i E38 needing a tranny oil replacement… It happens that outside US, BMW dos not replace this gearboxes oil, and they break at about 120000 miles or so… It would be nice to see how it is done, as far as this gearboxes (ZF 5HP24) have no level dipstick… I’ve had mine done, but I think they left the level low. I’ll love to see the correct process so I can fix the level if it is wrong.

You guys should really mention the oil in those r134a canisters. People could unknowingly be putting way too much in the system and end up costing themselves a small fortune.
October 20th, 2011 at 12:39 am
What was the purpose of adding a new transmission pan? It sounds like it takes more fluid, so what are the benefits besides more expensive fluid changes (and PML sponsorship)?
October 20th, 2011 at 1:11 am
Looks, and with more fluid and the design of the pan it keeps things cooler, which makes everything last longer.

hey does anyone have any tips, i just bought (my first car) a 1993 ford taurus sho with 65,000 miles on it. The owner said all it needs is a new brake booster. thanks!
February 17th, 2012 at 7:34 pm
Seriously anyone knows thats a fram filter…. Why use it with royal purple. it defeats the purpose
March 12th, 2012 at 7:29 pm
@retroguitarmaster He was afraid someone was going to ask him why Craftsman is making their tools in China and Taiwan. Hey Craftsman why are you doing this?
March 26th, 2012 at 8:46 pm
Never buy boutique motor oil unless you plan on establishing your own OCI through lab sampling. Almost anything will last 3k. Pissing away money on oil especially if you opted in on doing it and crying over gas prices doesn’t really compute.
