So, is that little ‘neg is closest to the tab’ the same on all cars? I’ve never heard of this, pretty handy if it is!

@motorztv Chris, Great video. I watched your video on the 2005? F150 Alpine system install, very informative! I just bought a 2010 F150 Lariat Super Crew. Before I swap out the 4 stock speakers for Infinity Component (drop-in replacement except for the separate tweeters and crossovers) I would like to know: Do the door panels come off the same for the 2009> 2010? as the one you showed? I’ve already did a swap job (using the same speakers) on a 1999 F150 Super Cab, and it was a piece of cake.

@tutorturtle Thanks for watching the show! Glad the episodes helped. Most of the Fords are similar… the screws and plastic tree clips might be in different places but it sounds like you have some experience so it should be a piece of cake. You’re invited to join the forums over at the Motorz TV website and ask the question there too!

I have a 2003 Ford Escape, do you know if I have to pop the entire door panel off or is it just a speaker cover? I’ve never done this before but it looks fairly easy.

@camarogod93 …. nope it’s really easy to determine positive and negative. Use a nine volt battery on the speaker you pull and connect it if you got polarity correct cone will push out.. since you now know it at the speaker you can match it up with the plug in vehicle..

[..YouTube..] @camarogod93 That is not a very good suggestion. An easier way to test speaker polarity is with a 9 volt battery. Take 2 “jump wires” and connect each of them to the speaker. Touch one wire to the positive end of the battery and the other wire to the negative. If the speaker moves “out” the the wire connected to the + end of the battery is your positive. (just make note on the factory speaker and match up to the connector). FYI though: for about 12 bucks you can get an adapter for your car

Another tip for negative and positive wiring with multi-color wiring comes from telephone. Tip and Ring, ring is positive (red wire) and tip is negative (green wire). When dealing with multiple pair (cat5) they have multiple colors with a white/X pair for each color. This is referred to as the broken green or blue or orange etc. Broken is the tip and therefor the negative. Broken tip of a pencil is an easy way to remember as well.
Hope that can help with stereos, phones and computers!

@Pseud0Link We found that is the case in our situation, but I doubt that carries on to other areas or vehicles. The best thing is to try to find a wiring diagram online or perhaps in a Chiltons/Haynes book.

“budget” and “speaker upgrade” should never be in the same sentence. You might as well save up for some nice components. Throwing your money in the trash with cheap coaxials

[..YouTube..] Instead of chopping off the speaker connector, you can get the Metra Speaker adapter (model 72-5600 for Fords) and use that to connect to the speaker. That way, if you so desire, you can go back to the OEM speakers without having to putz with wiring.
